Scientists have called for a ban on industrial purse seine fishing during the spawning period of May, June and July. Here's more. STORY: The meeting on Monday, November 24 was the last of seven days of talks at the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) meeting in Marrakech, Morocco. ICCAT's own scientific committee has warned that the blue fin tuna is on the brink of collapse. They say the sustainable limit has been exceeded by more than 400 percent. European Union officials have called the meeting "make or break." [Fernando Curcio Ruigomez, Spanish European Union Delegate]: "We need a robust recovery plan for the recovery of blue fin tuna stocks in the Eastern and Mediterranean stock." Environmental lobby groups like the World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace want a temporary ban on fishing, until countries can prove they're able to control their fishing industries. [Sebastian Losada, Greenpeace]: "What we are asking for is for respect to the management plan which follows the scientific advice, that means a maximum catch of about 16 tons but on the other hand, these fisheries are totally out of control." Others are skeptical about the numbers saying the basis for the tonnage caught is wrong or there must be bandits operating and if so it's a terrible problem. List of facts I thought I heard: The speaker is a fisherman, does it as a hobby. The fat content of a fish determines the quality of a fish. In order to determine the fat content, the purchaser looks and feels in the section of the fish where the tail is removed. The dark red color that some people desire is not a good indicator of quality. A dark red piece lacks the marbling caused by fat. In addition to that, the redness of tuna is sometimes artificially created by injecting dyes or gases. The quality of this particular fish was "as natural as could be". It was about 525 pounds in its current state. Before being cleaned and cut, it was over 700 pounds. Fish larger than 800 pounds are not as tasty as those that fall in the 350-700 pound range. This one was probably around 15 years old. He said that the teardrop shape of the fish was notable, but I'm not sure of the reason. This fish was harvested just before migration. I guess the bluefin bulk up before this voyage (NJ to Spain to the Indian Ocean), because he said they do not eat while traveling. Like people, most of the fat is closer to the surface of the fish.
