Ne esistono oltre 20.000 specie diffuse in tutto il mondo, la maggior parte delle quali terrestri; soltanto alcune si sono adattate a vivere nelle acque dolci, portando sott'acqua bolle d'aria di cui si servono per respirare (famiglia Argyronetidae). La maggior parte dei ragni misura meno di 1 cm, sebbene alcune specie raggiungano i 9 cm di diametro corporeo e qualche decina di centimetri contando anche lestensione delle zampe. La struttura di questi artropodi è simile a quella degli altri aracnidi: il corpo è suddiviso in due macrosegmenti cefalotorace o prosoma e addome o opistosoma separati da un sottile peduncolo, che conferisce flessibilità all'animale. Solitamente sul cefalotorace si trovano quattro paia di occhi semplici, che tendono a essere più grandi nei ragni cacciatori e più piccoli in quelli che tessono tele elaborate. Il primo paio di appendici, dette cheliceri, è composto da due segmenti e termina con un pungiglione in cui sbocca la ghiandola del veleno. La successiva coppia di appendici è quella dei pedipalpi, simili ad arti locomotori, ma in genere specializzati nella recezione sensoriale. Nei maschi i pedipalpi sono modificati a svolgere la funzione di organi copulatori. Le quattro paia di zampe si dipartono dal cefalotorace, mentre sull'addome si trovano le filiere, appendici modificate usate nella secrezione della seta. Piccole aperture laterali conducono a organi respiratori detti polmoni a libro (a causa della loro struttura stratificata) o a un sistema di trachee simili a quelle degli insetti, che trasportano l'ossigeno direttamente ai tessuti; alcune specie sfruttano entrambi i sistemi di respirazione, tracheale e polmonare. L'apparato digerente dei ragni è adattato in modo da poter assumere solo alimenti liquidi: una volta catturata la preda, questi animali riversano sopra di essa i succhi secreti dallepatopancreas e la digeriscono al di fuori del corpo; dopo averla ridotta in forma liquida, aspirano il nutrimento predigerito. Il cervello, relativamente complesso, presenta regioni più o meno sviluppate, a seconda che l'animale localizzi le prede servendosi principalmente del tatto o della vista. I ragni sono animali carnivori, che si nutrono esclusivamente di prede catturate vive. Essi le afferrano con i pedipalpi e vi iniettano il veleno con i cheliceri. Il morso di alcuni grossi ragni può essere doloroso, ma la maggior parte delle specie è troppo piccola per lacerare la cute dell'uomo. Tra le poche specie pericolose per gli esseri umani vi sono la vedova nera e le specie a essa affini (genere Latrodectus), che non sono aggressive, ma mordono l'uomo per difesa. Il loro morso doloroso provoca svenimenti e difficoltà respiratorie; sebbene raramente si riveli fatale, soprattutto se la persona colpita è un adulto sano, esso richiede cure mediche immediate. La seta del ragno è una proteina fibrosa, secreta in forma fluida da apposite ghiandole sericigene, che poi polimerizza diventando elastica e addirittura più resistente dell'acciaio. Un singolo ragno può secernere vari tipi di seta, che sfrutta per gli usi più diversi: il più noto è la costruzione della tela, che funge da tana e da trappola per insetti e altri piccoli animali. In genere, una volta che la preda viene catturata, il ragno continua ad avvolgerla con altra seta, secreta al momento. La capacità dei ragni di filare la tela rappresenta un esempio dell'evoluzione del comportamento istintivo. Un ragno, infatti, non impara a costruire la tela, ma la fabbrica in base a conoscenze innate. La filatura è un processo complesso, che comporta il posizionamento e la rimozione di orditure a spirale e la combinazione di filamenti adesivi e non. Le tele più semplici sono irregolari e in genere vengono realizzate sul terreno. Le tele più evolute sono, invece, molto intricate, sospese al di sopra del suolo e orientate in modo da intercettare le rotte degli insetti in volo. Tra i principali generi che filano le tele vi sono Tegenaria, Argiope, Pholcus e Araneus. Oltre ai ragni che filano le reti, ce ne sono molti che si procurano il cibo cacciando attivamente o appostandosi in attesa di una preda. Se si alimentano durante il giorno, i ragni cacciatori si affidano al senso della vista, mentre se cacciano di notte, a quello del tatto (localizzato soprattutto nei peli sensoriali). Le specie riunite nella famiglia dei salticidi, ad esempio, si appostano in attesa della preda e la catturano sorprendendola con balzi repentini; quelle del genere Thomisus tendono agguati mimetizzate tra i fiori. Descrição do Vídeo: I have an Argiope Spider in my mom's roses, Argiopes are pretty harmless spiders to humans. Here's the first photo I posted of the spider on my deviantART: http://nanasfreak.deviantart.com/art/Creepy-Argiope-Spider-103994330 (It has some more information about the spider.) Anyway, I found a strange grasshopper-look-alike bug, most likely a Katydid with it's wings not fully grown in or something. I caught it and threw it into the spider's web. Well, after it fell through the spider web like 3 or 4 times, all of which the spider missed out on getting it, I finally got it to stick in and got the spider to go back to the middle of it's web (because now it wanted to run away from all the damage being done to it's web) and it finially got the little grasshopper.
