Descrição do Vídeo: The Cats was een popgroep uit Volendam, bestaande uit zanger-gitaristen Cees Veerman (* 6-10-1943) en Piet Veerman (* 1-3-1943), Jaap Schilder (* 9-1-1943) (gitaar, piano), Arnold Mhren (* 28-1-1944) (bas) en Theo Klouwer (* 30-6-1947, 8-2-2001) (drums). De band was vooral populair in Nederland en Duitsland. The Cats heette in eerste instantie The Mystic Four, later The Blue Cats en kon (mede) worden opgericht door een lening van Jan Buys, hun latere manager. Dit was de vriend en latere echtgenoot van de zus van Jaap Schilder, een van de leden van The Cats. De groep had de grootste successen in de periode 1968 - 1972. Halverwege de jaren '80 verliet Piet Veerman de groep. Hij scoorde een solo-hit met het nummer Sailing home. Op 23 maart 2006 werden The Cats benoemd tot Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau. De bandleden Cees Veerman, Piet Veerman, Jaap Schilder en Arnold Mhren kregen de onderscheiding uit handen van de burgemeester van Volendam. Tegelijkertijd bracht de band, als nmalige renie, in de woorden van Piet Veerman "als dank aan al de fans" op initiatief van Bert van Breda en met medewerking van producer John Ewbank van o.a. Marco Borsato, een cd/dvd, Those Were The Days, uit waar twee nieuwe liedjes op staan: The Best Years Of My Life en de titelsong Those Were The Days, die beide na elkaar als single uitgebracht werden. Van het album waren in juli 2006 al ruim 35.000 exemplaren verkocht. De eerste 6 singles van de Cats waren alle up-tempo popsongs. Gn van de 6 A-kanten was van eigen hand. De vierde single: 'Sure He's A Cat', met op de B-kant: 'Without Your Love' een compositie van Cees Veerman & Mel Andy, een ballad gezongen door Cees Veerman deed het met een 12e plaats aardig in de Nederlandse hitlijsten. Op de 6e single: 'Turn Around And Start Again', werd voor het eerst gebruik gemaakt van de 'Palingsound' orkestratie en arrangementen. Het nummer haalde een 14e plaats in de Nederlandse hitlijst, maar het was toch de voorbode van het grote succes. Dat werd ingeleid met de volgende single en nummer 2 hit: 'Times Were When'. Participou do Festival MPB-Shell promovido pela Rede Globo, em 1980, com a música Essa tal criatura. Em 1985, gravou Isso é fundo de quintal. Atuou na telenovela Xica da Silva da TV Manchete, como Severina. Atualmente, além de se dedicar à carreira musical, é membro do Conselho Nacional de Promoção da Igualdade Racial e do Conselho Nacional dos Direitos da Mulher. Desde 2003 também vem exercendo a função de comentarista dos desfiles de escolas de samba do Grupo Especial de São Paulo, pela Rede Globo. Descrição do Vídeo: Unseen for years due to the fragility of the materials, 'Springtime in an English Village' offers an extraordinary and unexpected snapshot of rural life in wartime. After a fairly predictable opening - farmers ploughing fields, cute baby animals gambolling - it finally gets down to business. The film is about that most ancient of English traditions: the selection and crowning of the Queen of the May. But what is so surprising is that 60 years ago the village of Stanion in Northamptonshire chose to honour a young black girl - apparently the daughter of an African merchant seaman who had been evacuated there during the War. It's hard to know quite how literally to take the proceedings. The film was made by the Colonial Film Unit for the purpose of screening throughout Britain's African and Caribbean colonies - to demonstrate 'typical' life in the UK - at a time when the government was on the lookout for cheap labour. The recording is of a KOMA-OKC radio broadcast from October 29, 1949. Mr. Swart talks about recent legislation out of Washington City and how it will affect the family farmer. Mr. Swart died in July 1962, six months before my father was born. This is the first time I've ever heard my great-grandfather's voice. His father was a cornetist and leader of Pittsburgh's Eureka Brass Band,[3] his stepmother a church organist.[4] Hines at first intended to follow his father's example and play cornet but "blowing" hurt him behind the ears ? while the piano didn't.[5][6][7] He took classical piano lessons[8] and played organ in his local Baptist church but also developed an ear for popular show tunes and was able to remember and play songs he heard in theaters.Hines claimed that he was playing piano around Pittsburgh "before the word 'jazz' was even invented In 1928 (and on his 25th birthday) the always-immaculate Hines began leading his own 'big band', the pinnacle of jazz ambition at the time. For 11 years his was "The Band" in The Grand Terrace Cafe in Chicago.[24] The Grand Terrace was controlled by Al Capone ? Hines was Capone's "Mr Piano Man".[25] The Earl Hines Orchestra (or 'Organization' as Hines liked it to be known - it had up to 28 members) recorded for Victor in 1929, for Brunswick from 19321934, for Decca from 19341935, for Vocalion from 19371938 and for Bluebird from 1939 until the industry-wide recording ban of 1942-1945. From The Grand Terrace, Hines and his band broadcast on "open mikes" over many years, sometimes seven nights a week, coast to coast across America ? Chicago being well placed to deal with the U.S. live-broadcasting time-zone problem. Hines became the most broadcast band in America.[26] Among his listeners was a young Jay McShann in Kansas City who said his "...real education came from Earl Hines. When 'Fatha' went off the air, I went to bed.[27] But Hines' most notable 'student' was Art Tatum from Toledo, Ohio, 6 years younger than Hines and now regarded by some as the greatest pianist jazz has so far produced.[28] In The Grand Terrace, the Hines band did three shows a night, four shows every Saturday and sometimes did Sundays. Each summer, the whole band toured for three months, including through the South. "When we traveled by train through the South, they would send a porter back to our car to let us know when the dining room was cleared, and then we would all go in together. We couldn't eat when we wanted to. We had to eat when they were ready for us."[29] Occasionally Hines allowed other pianists to play as 'relief' piano player which better allowed Hines to conduct his whole 'Organization'. Jess Stacy[30] was one, Nat "King" Cole[31] and Teddy Wilson were others (though Cliff Smalls was his favorite), and it was here with Hines that Charlie Parker got his first professional job until he was fired for his "time-keeping" ? by which Hines meant Parker's inability to show up on time despite Parker resorting to sleeping under The Grand Terrace stage in his attempts to do so. It was during the 1940s (especially during the 19421945 recording ban) that members of the Hines' band's late-night jam-sessions laid the seeds for the upcoming 'revolution' in jazz - Bebop. Hines led his big band until 1948,[32] taking time out to front the Duke Ellington orchestra in 1944 while Duke was ill...but the big-band era was over.
