Julie, su mujer, padece episodios depresivos que convierten la vida de Philippe en un verdadero infierno. Así que en un intento de animarla, Philippe hace trampas para que le trasladen a la Riviera francesa. Pero le cogen y le envían a una pequeña ciudad en el norte de Francia llamada Bergues. Los Abrams son el arquetipo de la gente del sur que siente horror por el norte del país, un lugar inhóspito donde siempre hace frío y con un dialecto enrevesado e incomprensible llamado "ch´tmi". Así que Philippe irá solo a su destino. Pero para su sorpresa, el lugar es absolutamente encantador y la gente con la que trabaja es cariñosa, amable y acogedora. Se hace amigo de Antoine, el cartero del pueblo y el que se ocupa del carillón de la iglesia. Tiene muy mala suerte en el amor y una madre posesiva. Cuando Philippe regresa a Salon, Julie no se cree que le guste vivir en el norte. De hecho, está convencida de que le miente para no perderla.
