Descrição do Vídeo: The atheist bus journey by Ariane Sherine, Guardian Thanks to you we raised enough money to put ads on 800 buses across the UK, and the campaign has gone global Today, thanks to many Cif readers, the overall total raised for the Atheist Bus Campaign stands at a truly overwhelming £135,000, breaking our original target of £5,500 by over 2400%. Given this unexpected amount, I'm very excited to tell you that 800 buses instead of the 30 we were initially aiming for are now rolling out across the UK with the slogan, "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life", in locations all over England, Scotland and Wales, including Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, York, Cardiff, Devon, Leeds, Bristol and Aberdeen. From today's launch, two hundred of the buses will run in London, because the campaign was originally started as a positive counter-response to the Jesus Said ads running on London buses in June 2008. These ads displayed the URL of a website which stated that non-Christians "will be condemned to everlasting separation from God and then you spend all eternity in torment in hell Jesus spoke about this as a lake of fire prepared for the devil". Our rational slogan will hopefully reassure anyone who has been scared by this kind of evangelism. In addition, we're running adverts on two further types of media. In my last Cif blog on the campaign, I asked Cif readers for ideas on alternative ways to spend the funds, and also for thoughts on different slogans. Commenters WoollyMindedLiberal, PaoloV and Catch22 suggested that we use quotes from famous freethinkers, and we've done just that: from Monday January 12, 1,000 tube cards will run on London Underground featuring atheist quotations from Douglas Adams, Albert Einstein, Emily Dickinson and Katharine Hepburn (see above), alongside the original campaign slogan. An animated version of the slogan will also appear on two large LCD screens on Oxford Street (opposite Bond Street tube station), so that you can see the advert live without having to wait for an atheist bus. And, to thank all donors and show the strength of atheism in the UK, every ABC advertisement will contain the line "This advert was funded by public donations". Amazingly, the campaign has now gone international. Spain's Union of Atheists and Freethinkers are launching buses across Barcelona today with a translation of our slogan, Italy's Union of Atheist, Agnostics and Rationalists are also planning to roll out atheist buses, while the American Humanist Association have been inspired to launch a campaign, and buses carrying their slogan "Why believe in a God? Just be good for goodness' sake" have now been running for over a month in Washington DC. Sadly, not every country has been so open to the idea: the Atheist Foundation of Australia tried to place the slogan "Atheism celebrate reason" on buses, but were rejected by Australia's biggest outdoor advertising company. The campaign's success is thanks to Cif and Cif readers. If Matt Seaton hadn't allowed me to run with the idea here, and so many of you hadn't been so enthusiastic about it and donated generously to it, it would never have happened. There may be further campaign developments, and the campaign website and Facebook group will be regularly updated with the latest news; but for now, I hope you enjoy seeing the adverts on the streets, and that they brighten these bleak January days just a little bit. As Charlie Brooker one of the first people to donate to the Atheist Bus Campaign says: "Public transport in Britain suggests there isn't a God anyway, but in case anyone hasn't noticed, or feels isolated for thinking such a thing, this campaign should help." I hope it does. The Official Atheist Bus Campaign Website: http://www.atheistbus.org.uk/ Data: January 6, 2009 Vídeos Relacionados: : Atheism Religion Atheist Bus Campaign "Richard Dawkins" | ![]() |

Descrição do Vídeo: This really is it now, part 2 of 2 of 43002's Valenta Finale. Before I continue, you'll notice other videos are called "Valenta Encore". This is because although we had the Valenta Farewell, we had Valentas carrying on (albeit not on proper stock or in pairs) virtually as before. Don't get me wrong, the farewell was one of my favourite days ever (so much fun!), but others I know feel ripped off. Personally, I was full of delight, more time to get Valentas on the FGW services! So effectively it was like an encore to me, so I've used that in my video titles. The final days of 43002 and 43003 have been called "Valenta Finale" because that's exactly what it was, the final day for these power cars with Valentas. So on 4th January 2008 (when this part takes place), we're on the 2245 (of 3rd January, obviously going into the 4th at midnight) London Paddington to Swansea. On this night, we were routed via Bath Spa and Dr. Days Curve to Bristol Parkway, where we reversed and had the guilty pleasure of 43002 leading into Swansea. An added bonus was getting routed around Ninian Park! This video begins at Whitby Road Bridge, just as we branch off onto Dr. Days Curve (or Rhubarb Curve as I'm told it's also called). I suggest pumping up the volume now, the scream off 43002 was most delightful in person and just as much fun through earphones at the time of editing the video! We then jump to Cardiff Central where we're treated to a nice bit of thrash! Going around Ninian Park, I do have footage of the whole trip around it, but to include it all would require a third part to this video! I've included the best bits though where we're treated to a wide variety of DMUs and liveries. Next up, Bridgend. For some reason, I didn't record the Port Talbot Parkway departure. I've been cursing myself over this ever since. Finally, we see the departure at Neath. This section is long as we see the whole trip around the long curve out of Neath, but I left it on to capture the thrash out of the speed limit (since it was still powering, no point switching off!). Over the bridge at Landore, I'd foolishly left the lens cap closed so that bit does not feature. We then go by an ECS HST which was headed for platform 3 and arrive ourselves into platform 2 (how fitting!) at 0233. Finally, we see 43002 push out the set towards Landore for the last time. For the record, 43152 was the power car partnering 43002 in its last week or so. The final runs were: 0511 Abergavenny to London Paddington via Evesham, 0915 London Paddington to Cardiff Central, 1155 Cardiff Central to London Paddington, 1445 London Paddington to Swansea, 1829 Swansea to London Paddington and 2245 London Paddington to Swansea. Farewell S482, farewell to thy greatness. All was not lost on the Western Region, however. In May 2008, AXC started using HSTs again, with Valentas! Sadly this honeymoon period soon ended in September 2008, all too soon for my liking. And now, at the time of creating this video, we're left with just 7 power cars with Valentas. A very sad state of affairs. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Farewell S482. Descrição do Vídeo: Well, this was it. This was the final day of fun with FGW HSTs for us Valenta cranks. The date was 3rd January 2008. By gum, that feels like a century ago... We start this video at Abergavenny, at around 0510. Yes, we were that committed. Straight out of the station the throttle's wide open for the tackle of Llanfihangel, the most notorious bank on the Welsh Marches. It's a safe assumption to say we enjoyed that! Onwards and upwards from Hereford next then, with most of the journey spent sleeping after a virtually sleepless night in the hotel! We then view 43002 at London Paddington and next at Cardiff Central, where we also watch it head to the reversal siding. Next up we leave Cardiff Central from platform 2, a bit of an unusual occasion. Nice and fitting perhaps... Again at London Paddington next before we see 002 thrash out of Newport (we had been most sociable with fellow cranks on this run, which is why there is little footage). Then it's back to socialising to Swansea, where we then see 002 again. An attempt is made to get the departure at Bridgend, not much luck there. Arriving into London Paddington with 43002 and a Valenta for the last time had to be filmed! Next up, we see 002 start up at London Paddington. There is a seminar photo somewhere, I will try to find it and make it available this week. We finish this part off with the departure from London Paddington. Apologies for the angle, the vestibule was a little full surprisingly enough :p Part 2 coming up! Descrição do Vídeo: This is it, the final day of 43003 'Isambard Kingdom Brunel' with its Valenta, S155. The date, 2nd January 2008. Due to chasing after 43002, I have only limited footage of this one, so please excuse the fact it's not very long. 002 was always preferred for me over 003. This video starts after a fast run from coach A (at the back!) to the front of 43003 (that's a fairly lengthy run, let me tell you!) at Didcot Parkway, it working the 1230 Bristol Temple Meads - London Paddington. I had had to get off here to connect with 43002 coming down from Hereford at Charlbury. Next we see 43003 storming through Didcot Parkway, followed with its arrival with the delayed 2035 from Bristol Parkway to Swansea. We finish with watching it leave Cardiff Central. We had intended to stay with it to Swansea, however we got the gen that 002 was to work from Abergavenny to London on the 0511 and on from there. So it was an early bail (due to lack of connections back) for a hotel move. Farewell S155, RIP.
