Descrição do Vídeo: Except for a few clips from 1937's Topper, Cary Grant is absent from the proceedings of the 1939 sequel Topper Takes a Trip, though his Topper co-stars Constance Bennett, Roland Young, Billie Burke and Alan Mobray are back in harness and in fine fettle. Picking up where the first film left off, we find mild-mannered banker Cosmo Topper (Young) being sued for divorce by his wife Clara (Burke). It's all because of Topper's questionable behavior while at the mercy of mischievous ghosts George and Marion Kerby (Grant and Bennett). All the ghosts had wanted to do was "liberate" Topper from his stuffy existence, thereby performing a good deed that would allow them entree into Heaven. George Kirby was permitted to ascend to the Choir Invisible, but for obscure reasons the spirit of Marion was left behind. She decides that the only way she'll be allowed past the Pearly Gates is to reunite Mr. and Mrs. Topper, and to that end follows Clara to Paris and Monte Carlo. This time, Marion is joined in her mission by Skippy, a ghostly pooch who, like his mistress, can appear and disappear at will. As in the earlier Topper film, Roy Seawright's special effects vie for top comedy honors with the superb performance by Roland Young as the ever-flustered Cosmo Topper. Equally amusing are supporting players Veree Teasdale, Franklin Pangborn and Alex D'Arcy. The second of producer Hal Roach's Topper films (based on the novels by Thorne Smith), Topper Takes a Trip would be followed in 1941 by Topper Returns...and, of course, by the eternally-rerun TV series of the 1950s. Descrição do Vídeo: Humphrey Bogart plays Harry Morgan, owner-operator of charter boat in wartime Martinique. Morgan's right-hand man is Eddie (Walter Brennan), a garrulous alky whose pet question to anyone and everyone is "Ever get stung by a dead bee?" While in port, Harry is approached by Free French activist Gerard (Marcel Dalio), who wants to charter Harry's boat to smuggle in an important underground leader. Adopting his usual I-stick-my-neck-out-for-no-one stance, Morgan refuses. Later on, he starts up a dalliance with Marie Browning (screen newcomer Lauren Bacall), an attractive pickpocket. In order to help Marie return to America, Harry agrees to Gerard's smuggling terms. He uses his boat to bring resistance fighter De Bursac (Walter Molnar) and De Bursac's wife Helene (Dolores Moran) into Martinique. The Vichy police, suspecting that something's amiss, hold Morgan's pal Eddie hostage, tormenting the poor rummy by denying him liquor. Predictably, Morgan comes to Eddie's rescue and manages to escape Martinique, with the delectable Marie as cozy company. In the hands of director Howard Hawks and screenwriters Jules Furthman and William Faulkner, the end result bore only a passing relation to the original story by Ernest Hemingway: instead, it was a virtual rehash (but a good one!) of the recently released Casablanca, replete with several of that film's cast members. The film's enduring popularity is primarily -- if not solely -- due to the sexy chemistry between Bogart and Bacall, especially in the legendary "You know how to whistle, don't you?" scene. The most salutary result of To Have & Have Not was the subsequent Bogart-Bacall marriage, which endured until his death in 1957. It's widely believed that Lauren Bacall's singing voice was dubbed in by a pre-puberty Andy Williams; this is not true. For the record, a more faithful-to-the-source cinemadaptation of the Hemingway original was filmed in 1950 as The Breaking Point. Descrição do Vídeo: In his last formal statement that he wasn't able to deliver, he said, " I have returned to join the ranks of those struggling to restore our rights and freedom through nonviolence. I seek no confrontation." Benigno Servillano Aquino, Jr.[2][3] (November 27, 1932 August 21, 1983), popularly known as Ninoy Aquino or Benigno S. Aquino, Jr., was a former Philippine senator, governor, vice governor and mayor and a leader of the opposition to the rule of Ferdinand Marcos. He was assassinated at the Manila International Airport (now named the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in his honor) upon returning home from exile in the United States. His death catapulted his widow, Corazon Aquino, to the limelight and subsequently to the presidency, replacing the 20-year-old Marcos regime. On August 21, 1983, while on his way to Manila, Aquino was accompanied by several foreign journalists to ensure his safety or, at the very least, to record events for posterity in case rumors of a planned assassination proved to be true on China Airlines Flight 813. Despite a convoy of security guards (all assigned to him by the Marcos government) and a contingent of 1,200 military and police personnel on the tarmac, Aquino was fatally shot in the head as he was escorted off the airplane. Government investigators claimed that he was gunned down by Rolando Galman, who was immediately shot dead by the aviation security. No one actually identified who pulled the trigger, but Rebecca Quijano, another passenger, testified that she saw a man behind Aquino (on the stairs) point a gun at the back of his head, then there was the sound of a gunshot. A post-mortem analysis disclosed that Aquino was shot in the back of the head at close range with the bullet exiting at the chin at an angle which supported Quijano's testimony. Even more suspicions were aroused when Quijano described the assassin as wearing a military uniform. The government claimed that Aquino was killed by a Communist hitman. However, politicians and diplomats found evident contradictions between the claim and the photos and the videotape footage that documented the time before and after the shooting. The footage had circulated throughout the Philippines at that time.[9] Everyone from the CIA, to the United Nations, to the Communist Party of the Philippines to First Lady Imelda Marcos was accused of conspiracy. President Marcos was reportedly gravely ill, recovering from kidney transplant when the incident occurred. Theories arose as to who was in charge and who ordered the execution. Some hypothesized that Marcos had a long-standing order for Aquino's murder upon the latter's return. The Marcos government then ordered two independent bodies, the Fernando Commission and Agrava Fact-Finding Board, to investigate. The men on the tarmac, the rank and file of the military, were found guilty and are currently serving life sentences at National Bilibid Prison. They have recently filed an appeal to have their sentences reduced after 22 years, claiming the assassination was ordered by a Marcos crony and business partner (and Corazon Aquino's estranged cousin), Eduardo Cojuangco, Jr., who was eventually cleared by the Aquino family. Aquino's funeral procession on August 31 lasted from 9 a.m.--with a funeral mass officiated by the Catholic archbishop of Manila, Jaime Cardinal Sin, and held at Santo Domingo Church--to 9 p.m., when his body was interred at the Manila Memorial Park. Two million people lined the streets during the procession which was aired by the Church-sponsored Radio Veritas, the only station that covered the procession. The procession reached Rizal Park, where the Philippine flag was brought to half-staff. Jovito Salonga then heading the Liberal Party said about Ninoy: "... Ninoy was getting impatient in Boston, he felt isolated by the flow of events in the Philippines. In early 1983, Marcos was seriously ailing, the Philippine economy was just as rapidly declining, and insurgency was becoming a serious problem. I WAS UNDER THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF BC'S JURISDICTION - (WHO USED TO BE A JUDGE) - LOCKED UP AND FORCED TO TAKE MIND ALTERING DRUGS AND HE WANTS TO DO IT AGAIN - ILLEGALLY!!! Obviously he want's to shut me up. Otherwise, why would THEY not appeal that Order - (and which properly should have gone to the Attorney General of Canada - and they know it) and which is an appeal directly to the SCC - AND THEY KNOW IT - but instead, they contact an unfit Lawyer who quits before I fire him on even the thought of retaining him (a 23 year lawyer familiar with drug cases apparently, and then when I mention the Krieger case - he backs out and tells me I should represent myself; not got a clue about the Federal Accountability Act or the Canada Labour Board); and then THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF BC PERMITS THE SHRINK TO LIE ON HER REPORT -wanna know why? So the Judge will either lock me up and force me to take meds - or appoint the only lawyer available - which will be another unfit duty counsel - and who will decide that it is a lawyer's decision on how they run the case; and I will probably end up like James with an unjust conviction; and an illegal sentence - and of course Jail time and probably appropriation of my farm property to boot - WHILE all the while they don't read their OWN LAWS AND THE SCC COURT DECISIONS TO KNOW THAT THEY ARE THE ONES IN CHARGE OF THE RCMP (which really they already know - just like they know there is no pot law - just like that's why they don't tell the RCMP - BECAUSE GUESS WHAT KEEPS THEIR OWN ECONOMY GOING) Just you wait - because I'll get their pensions. Only charter buses and presumably hotel buses will be allowed into the city on Inauguration Tuesday. Washington, DC planners are preparing for millions of attendees and apparently there is little room or tolerance for cars. SUGGESTION: If you are staying in a Virginia and plan to attend the Inaugural, check with hotels for bus accommodation or find parking close to the main Potomac bridges and walk across to the mall or take public transportation where the transit lines begin to ensure you get a seat. Public transportation in DC cannot accommodate the number of visitors planning to attend; however, planners are working through all of these issues and may run special buses and routes. The Gaza Bombshell After failing to anticipate Hamass victory over Fatah in the 2006 Palestinian election, the White House cooked up yet another scandalously covert and self-defeating Middle East debacle: part Iran-contra, part Bay of Pigs. With confidential documents, corroborated by outraged former and current U.S. officials, the author reveals how President Bush, Condoleezza Rice, and Deputy National-Security Adviser Elliott Abrams backed an armed force under Fatah strongman Muhammad Dahlan, touching off a bloody civil war in Gaza and leaving Hamas stronger than ever. The Al Deira Hotel, in Gaza City, is a haven of calm in a land beset by poverty, fear, and violence. In the middle of December 2007, I sit in the hotels airy restaurant, its windows open to the Mediterranean, and listen to a slight, bearded man named Mazen Asad abu Dan describe the suffering he endured 11 months before at the hands of his fellow Palestinians. Abu Dan, 28, is a member of Hamas, the Iranian-backed Islamist organization that has been designated a terrorist group by the United States, but I have a good reason for taking him at his word: Ive seen the video. It shows abu Dan kneeling, his hands bound behind his back, and screaming as his captors pummel him with a black iron rod. I lost all the skin on my back from the beatings, he says. Instead of medicine, they poured perfume on my wounds. It felt as if they had taken a sword to my injuries. On January 26, 2007, abu Dan, a student at the Islamic University of Gaza, had gone to a local cemetery with his father and five others to erect a headstone for his grandmother. When they arrived, however, they found themselves surrounded by 30 armed men from Hamass rival, Fatah, the party of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas. They took us to a house in north Gaza, abu Dan says. They covered our eyes and took us to a room on the sixth floor. The video reveals a bare room with white walls and a black-and-white tiled floor, where abu Dans father is forced to sit and listen to his sons shrieks of pain. Afterward, abu Dan says, he and two of the others were driven to a market square. They told us they were going to kill us. They made us sit on the ground. He rolls up the legs of his trousers to display the circular scars that are evidence of what happened next: They shot our knees and feet?five bullets each. I spent four months in a wheelchair. Abu Dan had no way of knowing it, but his tormentors had a secret ally: the administration of President George W. Bush. A clue comes toward the end of the video, which was found in a Fatah security building by Hamas fighters last June. Still bound and blindfolded, the prisoners are made to echo a rhythmic chant yelled by one of their captors: By blood, by soul, we sacrifice ourselves for Muhammad Dahlan! Long live Muhammad Dahlan! There is no one more hated among Hamas members than Muhammad Dahlan, long Fatahs resident strongman in Gaza. Dahlan, who most recently served as Abbass national-security adviser, has spent more than a decade battling Hamas. Dahlan insists that abu Dan was tortured without his knowledge, but the video is proof that his followers methods can be brutal. Bush has met Dahlan on at least three occasions. After talks at the White House in July 2003, Bush publicly praised Dahlan as a good, solid leader. In private, say multiple Israeli and American officials, the U.S. president described him as our guy. According to Dahlan, it was Bush who had pushed legislative elections in the Palestinian territories in January 2006, despite warnings that Fatah was not ready. After Hamas?whose 1988 charter committed it to the goal of driving Israel into the sea?won control of the parliament, Bush made another, deadlier miscalculation. Bush was not the first American president to form a relationship with Muhammad Dahlan. Yes, I was close to Bill Clinton, Dahlan says.
