We Remember Fadamun

Descrição do Vídeo: In eighth grade, I leased this little arabian horse named Fadamun. He was spunky and green, but we hit it off. Dad surprised by buying the horse my freshman year of high school. I'd only been begging for a horse since I was a little girl, so for the next four years we trained and showed. Fadamun was my life just about everyday. In 1986, I was off to college and had to sell Fadamun. A sweet married gal in her mid twenties bought Fadamun with the agreement that if she ever sold him, I'd have first right of refusal. Early one morning, my freshman year in college, the telephone rang in my dorm room. Fadamun colicked and died. "What? He never colicked before!" I cried. The new owner went on to tell me that he probably tried to kick at his belly, but fell in his stall. He broke his hip and was destroyed. The gal then kindly drove to my college dorm room to sit with me while I cried and cried. She insisted that I take his bridle. She said breaking the news was the "toughest thing" she ever had to do. In grief, I made this video at my former high school's media department during my college break that winter. Unfortunately, I probably waited too long to transfer the footage to the computer, as the tape seems to be quickly losing quality and I don't have a 3/4 inch tape player to transfer the original. So, the story rested for years, until about 2005 when I was talking to an arabian horse breeder. "Out of curiosity would you look up Fadamun in the arabian horse registry?" I asked her. She did and mentioned that he won a national dressage competition in 1987, a year after his supposed death. I was floored. Did that gal actually put a kid through that kind of grief for a profit or was a mistake made on the arabian registry? The arabian horse registry assured me the former was the truth. Also, interestingly enough, Fadamun's breeder, Nolan Armstrong, was one of my favorite college professors that freshman year. I never knew about the connection to the horse until 2005, so I called him and we shared our memories with each other. It remains a mystery to me what actually happened to Fadamun, but for about a year I searched for old arabians that "could be" without luck.

Demolition of Friendship Park at US Mexico Border - Jan 7th

Descrição do Vídeo: The department of homeland security has hired Kiewit construction to work feverishly these last couple weeks of the Bush Admin to finish the triple fence at the San Diego/Tijuana border. This is the last portion, friendship park, only spot along the entire US/Mex border that is designated for bi-national friendship. It was designated by in 1971 by then, first lady Patricia Nixon, as Friendship Park in which she famously announced her hope that some day there wouldn't be any fences between our nations. The plan, now, is to put up a 15 ft wall that will completely seal off any access to the Monument and area of friendship where people can get to know each other and make friends through the fence. What you see in this clip is the demolition of the pathways that lead to Friendship Circle and Monument in order to make way for a 150 ft wide corridor that is part of a triple barrier project in the last 3.5 miles that was given way by a waiver of over 35 laws by the department of homeland security.
